When did you begin the enterprise? (and where if not Bath)

Bath Printing has been in business a long time…and has been producing work for Midcoast Maine customers for over 75 years. We bought the business from Eric and Pam Allen in March 2017. They had owned it for close to 30 years and before them Russell and Gloria Hatch owned it. We are the next generation of husband and wife teams and feel very privileged to have the opportunity to continue the best of traditional print whilst introducing innovative new technologies to create a bright future for our business.

Why?

We recently moved from the UK. Tom has come back to his roots. Having both lived very corporate, fast-paced lives in London, Uganda and Kenya, we both wanted to “be present” in our young children’s lives and offer them a wonderful childhood growing up in Maine. Plus we wanted to work together, creating something by ourselves and setting a good, solid example to them.  We also wanted to bring our dog to work!

What do you offer?

We print offset (the old way), digital (the new way) and wide format (banners, signs and large posters. Our print capabilities allow us to print from 1-to-thousands of quantities. Custom projects excite us, so if you have an idea that you think is impossible to create…we will work with you to get it done. We also offer Graphic Design and Photography.

Need to print multiple addresses on envelopes, postcards or newsletters? We make direct mail easy for you, your business or non-profit with affordable addressing services. We can also add return addresses or a special message to your mail piece at the same time.

If you need any bindery, we are your shop! Trimming and cutting (we can cut large paper down to size), saddle stitching, folding, drilling, padding, lamination, perfect, coil or GBC (plastic comb) binding.

We also offer: buttons, brochures, business cards, books, calendars, catalogs and journals, flyers, forms, greeting cards, invitations, menus, signs, certificates, plaques and awards, folders, rack cards, stationery, tickets, posters, raffle tickets, variable data, stickers, labels, magnets, promotional items, custom rubber and self-inking stamps, notary kits, and have a faxing service.

If it’s not listed just come in and ask.

Why do you love Bath?

Bath has such a deep, rich history. It is full of interesting, talented characters and we pinch ourselves every day that we are lucky enough to meet, talk to and become friends with such a wide variety of people and businesses. We have both have lived in a variety of cities in the US and around the world in Europe and in Africa and the strength of this community, kindness and compassion that Bath and the surrounding towns offer is truly unique. We really feel that we are part of a large, supportive, booming city that is on the up.

What might surprise someone about you or your business?

We each bring together extensive experience, creative style, artisan services and highly technical know-how. Tom once appeared on the cover of Money Magazine and won the top prize at his business school. He owned and operated a Turbo charger business in Detroit in his early 20’s and that is where he learned to print. Ash was born in Zimbabwe and has travelled extensively across Africa, working as a top Marketing and Communications expert in Kampala, Nairobi and London. She also owned and operated an advertising agency in Uganda in her 20’s. We both share a love of producing high quality, handmade work.

What are you excited about in the coming year?

We are very excited that we are just about to launch a letterpress service using our 1955 Heidelberg Windmill. Specializing in producing high-quality hand-crafted prints. Combining the quality and beauty of antique equipment and traditional printing with current design and technology. This means we will be able to offer handcrafted wedding invitations, menus, beer mats and more!

Also we now have the capability to competitively offer color digital work such as rack cards (check out the new Art Walk rack cards around town) We are also focused on producing calendars and now is the perfect time to start thinking about 2019 calendars.

Come in and see us as we are adding new products all the time. Prepare to be surprised!

What favorite local non-profits do you support?

A large portion of our business is with non-profits and we regularly collaborate on projects with many. Also our work with non-profits gives us the opportunity to work in the most efficient and effective way. Often we are able to introduce individuals and/or other businesses to support and build relationships between like-minded entities.

We support where we can make a difference, and this year our focus has been on the Arts and Music within our community. Be sure to go on the Art Walks and attend as many Summer music performances as you can!

By printing and shopping locally you help us support our community and you help yourself. You are helping to empower the local economy. Money spent locally, stays locally and it contributes to this amazing entrepreneurial ecosystem that so many of our neighboring local shops, restaurants and services are trying so hard to support and grow.

Main Street Bath really helps us by strengthening all the partnerships among our small businesses and community organizations. And if we look around us, it’s really working! We are proud and excited to be a part of it.
