Markings Gallery, 50 Front Street, Bath, Maine is pleased to welcome Barbara Burns as our newest associate member. To celebrate we are having a featured show for Barbara March 16- April 30th. Face Value: Portraits in Tapestry will have its official opening March 16th 5-7pm with a meet and greet with the artist.
Barbara has studied tapestry in the US and England. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the US, Europe, and Australia and has won awards in the US, England, and Serbia. Although Burns’ media is ancient, her imagery is contemporary, focusing on faces and figures. Burns says: “ I grew up surrounded by my mother’s collection of tribal masks and sculpture. I loved that each one was expressive, mysterious, and primal. This led to my fascination with faces and my desire to portray people who are historically or personally compelling. Most recently, I have been using images from photos I have taken of burlesque, belly dancing, and drag performers. This work explores the tensions, beauty, and contradictions in these performance arts. I find the dichotomy of the ancient medium of tapestry being used to express contemporary subjects a powerful tool.”
