MLK Jazz Concert

January 19, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Brad Terry and Peter Herman will be returning to the Bath United Methodist Church for a concert on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. This concert will feature tunes from the MLK era on this holiday weekend during which we celebrate the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Terry is a jazz clarinet player and accomplished whistler who has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Doc Cheatham, Buck Clayton, Red Mitchell, Buddy Tate, Elliot Zigman, Eddie Thompson, John Basile, Steve Grover and Lenny Breau. He has led jazz workshops and clinics in many countries. The most recognized album featuring Brad Terry is “The Living Room Tapes,” featuring his earlier work with legendary guitarist Lenny Breau. Terry is also author of a book, I Feel More Like I Do Now Than I Did Yesterday: A Collection of Remembered Stories, and signed copies will be offered for sale at the concert.

Peter Herman is an incredibly talented guitarist. Terry says: “We play tunes I’ve known for 50-60 years that he’s hearing for the first time and he brings with him a flood of new and refreshing harmonic and melodic ideas. He has mastered a lot of amazing technique and throws musical curve balls at me, definitely keeping me on my toes. We play a variety of standard jazz tunes and spontaneously create musical conversations that take us to surprising places.”

The duo will play standards from the American song book, Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington and more, all done quietly with lots of interplay — a musical, impromptu conversation.

This event is free but donations will be graciously accepted. Suggested donation $10. Bath UMC is located at 340 Oak Grove Ave, Bath.

The jazz duo will also be leading music during the church’s main worship service at 10:15 a.m., and all are welcome.
