Music Workshop with Susan Gaeta
August 10, 2019 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Vocalist and guitarist Susan Gaeta is an important member of a new generation of musicians who are exploring the rich and varied traditions of Sephardic music. Susan has appeared at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC, the Askenazi Festival in Toronto, and historic concerts in Istanbul and Sarajevo.
Susan Gaeta will present a program of Sephardic songs and stories of the Bosnian composer and National Heritage Fellow, Flory Jagoda . Flory, a Holocaust survivor, grew up in the Sephardic tradition in a musical family. Of the Altarac family, only she now survives at age 95.
The songs Susan will share, preserved largely by women and sung in Judeo-Spanish or Ladino, paint a detailed picture of Jewish daily life, holidays and memories of a unique culture the Sephardim maintained with astonishing faithfulness after their exile from Spain in 1492.
Susan, a Master Artist with the Virginia Humanities has studied and toured with Flory for many years and is intent on preserving and passing on the traditions of her mentor’s rich heritage. She will translate and teach some of her delightful compositions.
