Navigation at Sea: How to get there from here thru the ages

Born and raised in Flushing, Michigan, Mark Phillips graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1974 and spent five years as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard ships operating out of San Diego, California; he retired from the Naval Reserves in 1994.  A thirty-year career with Lockheed Martin Corporation concluded with two positions, Combat System Ship Superintendent & Test Operations Group Leader on a team responsible for installation and test of the AEGIS Combat System on BIW-built DDG 51 Class Destroyers.  In addition to Maine’s First Ship, Mark also volunteers at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and as a Cub Scout Den Leader.

Presentation on the various methods of navigating at sea from the ancient Phoenicians, Polynesian, and Viking voyages to modern day satellite navigation systems.  Improvements to measuring instruments and methodologies.  How the ability to determine accurate time of day revolutionized navigation at sea as well as cartography.  Why the measurement of time is still critical to modern navigation systems.

The presentation will be from 7-8pm followed by question and answers and light refreshments.
