Popham Colony History – Part 1 – Early Navigators 1497-1583
Dan Wood
In 1496, only four years after Columbus, King Henry VII of England gave John Cabot a patent to discover whatever part of the world which was before this unknown to Christians. Thus started over a century of exploration and settlement attempts which led up to the Popham Colony. Named Vinland by the Vikings, America ten years after Cabot, Norumbega, Neuvelle France, and Acadia by the French, and Virginia by the English. It was 8 years after the Popham Colony that it took on the lasting name of New England. This is the story of the explorers and would be settlers. Part 1 covers the early navigators who explored the area.
Dan Wood practiced medicine in Bath for 33 years. Since then he has actively worked with Maine’s First Ship working on the construction of Virginia, the repair and upgrade of the Bath Freight Shed, and of Virginia’s dock. For many years he was a member of the MFS board.
This is the 7th of 8 in our 2023 Summer Lecture Series. This year’s lectures will be held on Wednesday evenings. The lectures will be held at the Bath Freight Shed and via Zoom. FMI https://mfship.org/events
