Town History Series: The Geology of West Bath and its Influence on the Early Years

January 29, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

The local geology of the West Bath area has impacted the lives and livelihoods of West Bath citizens since the mid-1600s.  We will look at such things as early (1700s and even 1600s) tidal mills and the milling process, 1800s granite quarrying and its role in the building boom in Bath, the origin of Witch Spring and its clear, cold water, as well as the search for the strategic mineral mica during WWII times. For those of you who spent your youth sledding down Small’s Hill, you will find out how geology has played a role!  The talk will end with a discussion of how the geology of West Bath and the rest of the southern coast of Maine ultimately came to be.

This talk will be presented on Zoom by Jim Brophy, Retired Professor of Geology (Indiana University). Register here: https://bit.ly/thswestbath22

With support from West Bath Historical Society.
