When did you begin the enterprise? (and where if not Bath)
Halcyon Yarn started in Denver Colorado in 1971, and we moved to our current location in Bath in 1981, and we’re so glad we did. This year marks 45 years in business, as well as the transition to our second generation of family ownership!
There’s nothing more rewarding than making something beautiful by hand, and we’re incredibly lucky that our job is to help people pursue their creative passions. We care deeply about where the objects in our lives come from, and we are amazed by the creativity and skill of our staff, teachers, and customers. We love sharing and celebrating the community of artists and makers in the fiber arts, and providing a hub for creativity!
What do you offer?
Halcyon Yarn started out providing high quality natural fibers to handweavers all over the country, and in our 45 years we’ve expanded to serve all of the fiber arts. We continue to be a go-to for weaving supplies, and we also provide yarn and tools for knitting and crochet, fibers for spinning and felting, dyes, and materials for rug hooking. We offer classes in all the crafts, and the years ahead will bring even more natural fiber offerings, including more locally made yarns and products, tools, and unique textile books and supplies.
Why do you love Bath?
Bath is so supportive of independent businesses, it’s really unique! We have customers visit the shop from all over the world and they often remark how welcoming the town is, and what a treat it is to experience such a sense of genuine small town community. Every year there are new and distinct businesses and cultural opportunities, and with balance that innovation with a sense of place, history, and interconnection. We’re lucky here that our friends and family are also our providers and customers, so we get to work with people we really care about!
What might surprise someone about you or your business?
How much yarn there is! We’re one of the largest independent yarn stores in the world, with customers on every continent, and we do it all with a small and very dedicated staff from right here in Bath. Even if you’re not a yarn person, we’d love for all our neighbors to pop in for a dose of color and texture. As the days get shorter, and we all need a little pick-me-up, we’ve got over 10,000 square feet of cozy to explore!
What are you excited about in the coming year?
We’re thrilled to be expanding the selection of what we carry, especially with a focus on more sustainably and locally made products. We’re also really looking forward to offering more retreats and workshops, it is great to invite customers from all over to visit us and enjoy all the area has to offer in the fiber arts, and beyond.
