Every vessel tells a story, and Maine Maritime Museum has been piecing together the often elusive story of the 1906 schooner Mary E. Join Chief Curator Anne Witty as she shares the process of searching for images, documents, and personal stories to better understand the vessel's long history. She'll also describe how the museum uses modern technology to assist in recording the vessel's lines, shape, and restoration through current techniques like photogrammetry.

Built in 1791, Portland Head Light is Maine's oldest lighthouse.  Tour the museum located inside the Keeper's Quarters, then enjoy a truly rare opportunity to climb the spiral staircase of the 80-foot tower. The Shakers are famous for their simple and elegant designs, and the Shaker oval box is no exception. Learn boatbuilding techniques such as clinch nailing and steam bending, though no experience, boatbuilding or otherwise, is required. Each participant will build three nesting oval boxes made from cherry and cedar. This class meets on July 18 and 19, 2018 from 5-8pm and on November 28 and 29, 2018 from 5-8pm. Includes all materials.

Constructed with durable deck screws, these chairs will last a lifetime with minimal maintenance. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to work hard and a love of comfortable chairs. Restoring the Schooner Mary E

Early in 2017, Maine Maritime Museum acquired the schooner Mary E and began an extensive restoration to bring her closer to her original 1906 configuration as a fishing schooner. Shipwright Andros Kypragoras and Director of Watercraft Kurt Spiridakis will discuss the scope of the restoration work that was required, challenges, and critical decisions that were made during this process.

Behind the Scenes Tour of the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey

In the spring of 2015, the Ernestina-Morrissey was hauled at the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard to begin a multi-year refit overseen by master shipwright Harold Burnham. The Ernestina-Morrissey, Ex. Effie M. Morrissey is a National Historic Landmark Vessel and the Official Vessel of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The tour will include conversations with the shipwrights involved in her restoration as well as a first-hand look at the tools and materials being used to bring the Ernestina-Morrissey to her latest phase in a most extraordinary history.
